Demolition Derby Rules
SAFETY RULES
1. Long sleeved shirts are required when driving. Fire suits are recommended. Pants must be worn, no shorts. Gloves are recommended while driving, but are optional. DOT approved helmets are required. No hard hats or football helmets. Full faced helmets are recommended. Drivers must wear belt and helmet while in the car at all times, until a red flag is waved and all the cars have stopped, or the derby is over. Keep arms and body in car at all times or you will be disqualified.
2. NO HEAD ON HITS they must be at an angle. DO NOT HIT THE DRIVER’S DOOR!!!!! Sometimes these do accidently occur, but if it looks intentional, or careless, you will be disqualified. Do not use your driver’s door as a shield. No love taps allowed. No teamwork allowed, you must hit everyone. There is a 60 second AGGRESSIVE HIT rule on all cars. No hitting dead cars or cars with no stick showing. Violations may cause you to be disqualified. The derby will be stopped for bumpers or axles in the arena to be removed for the safety of the drivers and spectators.
3. Car numbers must be placed on the roof of the car no smaller than 12” and must be able to read from both sides of the car/sign. The drivers and passenger doors must have numbers at least 18” tall. Both the sign and two doors must have a white background with dark colored numbers for easy visibility.
4. All glass, broken glass, dirt and loose debris must be swept from the car. The rear seats and interior must be removed from the car. The rear seats and interior must be removed. Headlights, tail lights, tail lenses, dash glass, all chrome trim, door handles, license plate brackets, luggage racks, mud flaps, and trailer hitches must be removed prior to admittance to the race track.
5. The gas tank must be removed and a fuel cell or boat tank must be placed in the area behind the front seat inside the car. The original tank can not be used. No 5-gallon gas can allowed and no plastic tanks. The tank must be anchored securely to the floor with a chain or metal strap and covered. No tarp straps, wire or bungee cords allowed to secure gas tank. Electric fuel pumps must have a cover on them (metal box or inner tube) and all lines must be enclosed in garden hose or some other covering. No alcohol, or nitrous may be used and there is a 6 gallon fuel limit.
6. Transmission coolers allowed only if exposed lines are inside protective covering such as radiator hose, or garden hose. Transmission coolers also must be placed in a metal box or covered to protect against ruptures and spraying hot oil on driver.
7. Battery must be removed from stock position and installed inside passenger compartment. It must be securely bolted to the door with a metal strap and covered. No tarp straps, wire or bungee cords allowed to secure battery.
8. There must be a 3-4” square or round metal brace bar behind the driver’s seat with a minimum of 6x6” (maximum 16x24) plate 1/4” thick attached to the ends. Roll cage may be put in drivers compartment, but not behind the drivers compartment and can not be secured to the frame, only the body. No bracing on outside of drivers door.
9. A minimum of two 12” holes cut into hood for fires. No cutting holes where the fan is. If you cut out the firewall for space, a protective cover must be placed over the hole to prevent competitor from being sprayed with hot oil or water.
10. Windshield bars are to welded to protect the driver; 2 bars from the top of the windshield to the dash area. One must be in center of windshield and the other between the first bar and the driver’s side. Bars must be 5/8” diameter. No #9 wire allowed or you will not compete.
11. NO ALCOHOL IN PITS. NO FIGHTING. NO WRECKLESS DRIVING IN PIT AREA. NO PROFANE LANGUAGE OR GESTURES.
