KILROY AWARD

21ST CENTURY WAYNE EXPLORERS

The Railroads came and the European Immigrants were not far behind, bounteous prairies beconed and freedom was just what they had in mind. With simple tools an sweat and guts, they came to tame this wild land. This land the experts called a desert of blowing and drifting sand.

There weren't trees to build houses with, they constructed them with sod. One of the many freedoms in the United States was their tight worship to God. Each in their special way they built the community, churches and schools. They proved the desert could be farmed with ingenuity and simple tools.

God blessed this flat land called Nebraska, the desert produced grain. Where to market it's produce--a town named after "Mad Anothony Wayne". Now with an improved market for their produce and with improved tools, they needed education, so, presto, J.M. Pile Normal Schools.

After fall harvest and before Spring planting, and between daily chores fafrm boys could further their education with a Farmers Winter Course. The desert bloomed and the agricultural economy turned out just great. The village turned into a city and Pile Normal became Wayne State College.

Old soldiers and explorers never die, they both just quietly fade away. We hope our old Soldier Mad Anthony Wayne would be proud of his city today. Twenty First Century Explorers saw changes were needed if it were to gain. There has been aneeded face lifting enhancing the great old street Wayne!
